Children were given writing journals. They were given time either as an early starter or an afternoon starter to write. Sometimes I would write on the board ‘Free writing’ and sometimes I would give them a choice of activities with Free writing being one of them. I would ask the children who would like to read their work out or sometimes children would come and ask me if they could read their work out to the class. I put my chair out in the middle of the room for the child to sit on so they felt like it was a treat, this also helped them feel special about reading their work out. Some children wrote stories whereas others wrote songs and poems.
Children came to ask if they could write in their journals after they had completed other activities.
I found writing journals a good way for the children to become more confident with their writing. They were able to choose what they wrote about which I feel was important as straight away they had some key ideas and they wanted to write.
