Year 3: Brenda Griffin

Working with Language

In Literacy I used the Zone of relevance which was suggested to me by Jo on the writing project. This is a circle, like a bulls eye with three zones. When I asked the children for descriptive words to describe the setting at Jack’s beanstalk I then placed the words on the zone. If words were placed in the centre of the zone they were relevant and appropriate for the context. The further away from the centre I placed the words the less relevant for the given task they were. This was effective and it meant that all children’s words were put up on the board, rather than saying to children to think again or to uplevel before it was put on the board. It also gave time for the children to think and reflect on words that were placed as they could then see why words were placed in a certain place.

This helped children identify important vocabulary.
