We used ‘The Windmill Farmer’ short clip to link with Jack and the Beanstalk. I showed the children the clip which only has music playing in the background, no speaking.
Initially I asked them to close their eyes and think about the possible setting the film would have, the characters that might be involved, what events were happening and how the movie made them feel. The children then did a grid on their whiteboards with notes under each heading. This was then discussed as a class. Then the film was played and stopped and started to discuss events and predict what was going to happen. The children then ‘mapped out’ the events on sugar paper in ability groups. This was then discussed then they ‘stepped out’ the events.
For their writing piece the children were given different tasks. Lower Ability Pupils - needed to recall the events in order. Middle Ability Pupils: Had to change the problem. Higher Ability Pupils: Had to change the problem and add in a new character.

As this was visual the children found ‘mapping out’ easier to do rather than recalling from a story. They were then confident in mapping out as they had done this before. Stepping out was completed well as they could relate to the images in the film and act out more clearly as they had a guide as to how they looked.
